Kentucky to Redesign Principal Training
State, university and school leaders in Kentucky are working together to redesign principal preparation programs. The legislature created a task force that will spend one year studying how to change preparation programs to ensure a focus on the specific skills needed to bolster student achievement and to provide internship opportunities in real schools. The task force will issue a report in the fall of 2007. Read the newspaper story here.
What's your state doing to improve principal preparation programs? Let us hear from you.
My state is not doing anything yet--any suggestions how to get them interested?

I agree with Phillip Rogers: "The 21st century principal needs to be focused on instructional learning and closing achievement gaps." But what would principals have to know and be able to do to accomplish this? One skill that 21st century principals need is the skill of capitalizing on the expertise of accomplished teachers. Given our current teacher supply problem, every child in America is not going to have a caring, competent and qualified teacher any time soon. But every child could have a teacher who is overseen by a caring, competent and qualified teacher.
Every other professional field places people with expertise in positions from which they can influence and improve the whole organization. 21st century principals need to identify accomplished teachers and have them guide and supervise the new teachers in their schools who may be caring and "highly qualified" but are not yet competent. Principals cannot adequately provide instructional leadership for teachers of all subject areas and grade levels in their buildings on their own. They should be trained to leverage the resources available to them, including accomplished teachers, if we want to improve instruction and close the gap.
