Leading With the Head and the Heart

To lead the way to increased student learning, leaders must lead with both their head and their heart. This is an insight gleaned from the experience and practice of “Breakthrough” high school principals. Principals are considered a “Breakthrough principal” if they (1) lead a high school that serves large numbers of students who are potentially at risk of failure, and (2) can document that at least 90% of their students graduate from high school and go on to a postsecondary education program.

The Breakthrough High Schools initiative is a project of the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) and is funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The initiative was the focus of the June ’06 issue of NASSP’s publication, Principal Leadership. “ This special issue - "Elements of Success in Breakthrough High Schools" – identified the strategies Breakthrough high school principals used to achieve success with high-poverty, high minority student populations. Thanks to the generosity of NASSP, you can download for free the article written by IEL staff, "Leading the Way to Increased Student Learning," here. If you would like to order a copy of the full issue (be advised: they;re “flying off the shelf”), please contact the Director of Publications at: farraceb@principals.org. (Note: subscribers to Education Digest will find a condensed version of this article in the September 2006 issue.) To learn more about Breakthrough High Schools, visit NASSP's web site.
