The Academy | University of Michigan -- Flint
Program Goals
The goals of The Academy are to:
Identify, recruit, train, and support any number of qualified individuals from within seven contiguous Genesee County (MI) high-needs K-12 districts who will serve as highly qualified urban and rural principals to ameliorate potential shortages.
Decrease the gap between principal training and practice through the development of university-based principal-preparation and ongoing-professional-development programs. These programs are oriented toward real-world, job-embedded competencies judged critical to principal effectiveness in improving the academic performance of all students in high-needs urban and rural schools.
Attract a principal-candidate pool that is diverse in terms of gender and race and that mirrors the existing demographic composition of the local district(s) and community.
Collaborate with high-needs districts to develop and integrate into a structured professional-development program a complete repertoire of professional development modules that are job embedded, relevant to No Child Left Behind accountability measures, and that develop the critical leadership skills and knowledge demanded in today’s high stakes urban and rural school environment.
Provide partial tuition reimbursement for aspiring and practicing principals to make Academy programs accessible to qualified individuals who may lack the necessary financial resources and/or incentives to serve as an urban or rural principal.
