Strategies for Student Success
The various components of Academy programs are designed to prepare and provide ongoing support to urban and rural principals who can provide effective leadership to promote learning by all students. To accomplish this, the programs advance two perspectives. First and foremost is the expectation that candidates will be rigorously instructed in the theoretical assumptions and research based conclusions concerning administrative practices required to meet the expectations for schools and schooling in light of today’s social and political realities.
The second perspective that undergirds Academy programming is the belief that exposure to the theoretical and empirical base in school leadership must be coupled with a substantial set of experiences that are grounded in practice. All Academy coursework is delivered in a mixed mode format that includes lectures, assigned readings, literature reviews, panel discussions, field observations, practitioner interviews, problem-based instruction, and simulations. Academy programs equip the educational administrator with concepts and tools and provide an informed perspective on the range of problems and responsibilities confronting urban and rural education today.
