Coaching Leaders to Attain Student Success (CLASS) & New Administrators Project (NAP) | New Teacher Center | University of California - Santa Cruz
Program Summary
Introduction
Coaching Leaders to Attain Student Success (CLASS) trains professional leadership coaches to work with novice and veteran principals. This training is available nationally. The New Teacher Center (NTC) also supports networks of school leadership coaches. The New Administrators Project (NAP) is a regional project that provides direct induction services to beginning principals. Providers are trained CLASS coaches.
Theory of Change
School improvement is dependent upon effective teaching and leadership and the development of strong teaching and school leadership professions. Professionals need induction support in their first few years of service. Quality induction is grounded in intensive coaching or mentoring.
The NTC’s core values include the belief that good teachers are at the center of successful education and that positive changes in schooling depend upon a strong teaching profession and quality teachers, effective shared leadership, and supportive working conditions. Any “theory of change” informing educational improvement must address the need to build human capital in schools.
The NTC is committed to supporting the role of schooling in strengthening our democracy and in pursuing social justice.
Definition of Leadership
The ISLLC Standards and dispositions serve as a framework for describing school leadership. The NTC’s approach to leadership development is eclectic, drawing upon a variety of definitions and visions of leadership. We believe that leadership must be nurtured among all members of the school community, including students, parents, community, teachers and administration.
Mission Statement
The mission of the New Teacher Center is to improve student learning by supporting the development of an inspired, dedicated, and highly qualified teaching force. Effective leadership is essential to the accomplishment of that mission. School administrators who are teacher leaders, and who have a deep understanding of teaching and learning in relation to both adults and children, are essential to school improvement. The commitment of CLASS coaches is to support the development of principals as instructional leaders who will positively impact student achievement at their sites.
Costs
Cost for CLASS training is approximately $500 per participant. Cost for NAP support is approximately $6,000 per year. School district and grant support covers the costs. The CLASS program was developed with support from the Stupski and Noyce Foundations.
Licensure
The NTC’s New Administrators Program satisfies the California Professional Clear Credential requirement. This program is offered in collaboration with the Association of California School Admistrators.
Standards
Program curriculum is aligned with the ISLLC Standards and with the California Professional Standards for Education Leaders. When working outside of California training materials are revised to match local standards.
Measuring K-12 Student Success
The NTC monitors student achievement data, principal behavior, attitudes and retention.
