Indiana Principal Leadership Academy (IPLA) | Indiana Department of Education

Program Summary

Introduction

The Indiana Principal Leadership Academy is a nationally recognized model for professional development for public school leaders. Principals who have demonstrated a potential for professional self-growth are identified and selected to be a part of the Academy. They develop that potential through an intensive two-year program involving 18 days of in-service work. IPLA’s emphasis is on both process and content with four phases of learning.

Theory of Change

In the leadership phase the school leader is to develop knowledge and understanding of his/her personal leadership style and its effect on the learning organization; the change process for systems, organizations, and individuals; the principles of developing and implementing the school’s strategic and continuous improvement and achievement plan; organizational structures that sustain continuous improvement for student learning; and emerging issues and trends that influence or impact the school community.

Definition of Leadership

Leadership is the ability to transform the school community for student success, community involvement and a welcoming climate conducive to learning. Leaders of instruction as well as operations can create personal relationships that constantly review current practices while anticipating the changing needs of school.

Mission Statement

The Indiana Principal Leadership Academy is committed to strengthening the leadership of principals. Focusing on people, the Academy provides innovative and uncompromising quality services for educational leaders to improve school communities.

Costs

The school districts pay the program fee of $110.00 per participant. Participants pay any hotel and meal costs. This fee has not been increased in years and needs to be adjusted to be a truer representation of the cost.

Licensure

IPLA provides 90 Continuing Renewal Units (CRUs) to renew an administrative license upon the completion of the 18-day program.

Standards

The program is based on the standards of the Interstate School Leadership Licensure Consortium (ISLLC). The curriculum is closely tied to No Child Left Behind and Indiana Public Law 221, the state's school-improvement and accountability law, which predates NCLB.
