LEAD Fairfax | Fairfax County Public Schools, Fairfax, Va.
Activities: More Details
The LEAD Fairfax Summer Institute is a week-long, learning-intensive activity that is used to set the tone for a year of learning and growth for interns and mentors alike. Throughout the week, activities include teambuilding, identifying leadership strengths, framework for receiving and providing feedback, and aspects of coaching and mentoring.
Specifically, participants learn about their own leadership styles through assessments such as StrengthsFinder from Gallup and Change Style Indicator from Discovery Learning. They discuss "leadership”" and listen to a panel of current leaders (assistant principals and principals) in the system. They learn "tools" such as Situation-Behavior-Impact from the Center for Creative Leadership which provides a framework for effective feedback. A significant portion of the week is devoted to the topic of coaching and mentoring for both interns and mentors. Participants learn to develop an individual leadership development plan during this week as well.
LEAD Fairfax employs a variety of tools and programs to ensure the Summer Institute is enriching. Action Learning by Global Learning Associates is a program used by small groups to solve big problems. It provides tested methods of accelerated learning, which enable people to mastr and handle difficult situations. Individual Professional Development Plans provides a focus for planning professional development and leadership development goals. Blackboard provides an online communication device for announcements, discussion, and dissemination of information. Building Leadership Capacity in Schools by Linda Lambert and ASCD focuses on leadership capacity as a framework for instructional leadership. And A Framework for Understanding Poverty by aha! Process, Inc. provides an in-depth understanding of the implications of socio-economic conditions on teaching and learning.
