LEAD Fairfax | Fairfax County Public Schools, Fairfax, Va.
Obstacles
The large number of FCPS employees (24,000+) results in unavoidable leadership turnover. To keep pace with the succession of new administrators, the school district and LEAD Fairfax are presented with major challenges. Therefore, work continues on the development and implementation of a viable succession plan for FCPS. Fifty-five years of age, with 25 or more service years tends to be the practical age of retirement. Within FCPS, the average age of current principals is approximately 53 years. According to LEAD participant statistics, this pattern is consistent with data collected. We can expect a constant rate of retirements, which presents challenges for our program and the district.
With more than 100 different languages represented, and an increasingly diverse student body, demographics represent another challenge. Enrolled in the 82 LEAD-eligible schools are 23,000 of the 32,000 economically disadvantaged students, which also presents a challenge to the program.
