Principal Leadership Program for Rural Multicultural Schools Across Northern New Mexico (LeadNM) | University of New Mexico
Leadership Issues and Challenges
Closing the academic achievement gap and providing a quality education for all students is one of the greatest problems in Northern New Mexico. Most Northern New Mexico Network schools are located in poor rural areas with large minority groups. It has been a challenge for these schools to meet all the new reform mandates and it will be especially challenging for all schools to meet Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). These problems cannot be solved by individuals or isolated groups – the task is too great. Acknowledging that the natural way people learn is through communication, LeadNM has responded to this need through the establishment of Professional Learning Communities (Wheatley, 2002).
