New Leaders for New Schools

Activities

New Leaders for New Schools is a three-year program which includes intensive coursework, experiential, hands-on training, and on-the-job support. Beginning with the application and admission process, our program is designed to be rigorous and intensive in order to prepare principals to meet and overcome the challenges of urban school principal and drive high achievement.

Once an applicant is accepted to the program, he or she becomes a Resident for a full year. Over the summer Residents spend six-weeks at Summer Foundations taking classes led by nationally recognized faculty. Residents spend the academic year working at a public district or charter school under the guidance of a mentor principal. Throughout their first year as New Leaders, Residents continue to complete coursework and attend four Foundations Seminars throughout the year. They also meet on a weekly basis with their Leadership Coaches, retired principals with a record of success, who teach and support Residents. Working with their mentor principal and Leadership Coach, Residents set specific goals around student achievement, such as raising reading scores across a particular grade level, and are responsible for achieving measurable results.

During the next two years, New Leaders provides our principals and assistant principals with continued professional development, access to resources, and intensive coaching and on-the-job support. Leadership Coaches meet with New Leaders on a regular basis during these two years and provide feedback and guidance.

Upon completion of the three-year program, New Leader actively participate in the national alumni network — a community of educators who rely on and support each other as they work to transform our nation’s urban public schools.
