New Leaders for New Schools
Leadership Issues and Challenges
The profound achievement gap in this country disproportionately affects students of color and students from low-income backgrounds. New Leaders for New Schools specifically targets high-need urban schools and school systems to provide them with the leadership necessary ensure that those students who have been historically underserved achieve academic success. New Leaders also aims to combat two other growing problems: 1) the nation’s growing principal shortage-- nearly 50 percent of urban principals will be eligible to retire in the next five years and 2) the failure of traditional principal development programs to adequately prepare principals for urban school settings.
