New Leaders for New Schools

Learning Priorities

To ensure that our New Leaders residents and principals develop the skills to improve instructional quality in their buildings and create effective learning communities, New Leaders has developed a key set of standards around which we build our curriculum and principal assessments. These standards, called New Leaders for New Schools’ Principal Leadership Competencies, are a set of personal and professional attributes shared by successful school leaders. They were developed based on research on the common characteristics of effective urban schools, research on school leadership and the link between principal actions, school quality, and student outcomes, and extensive market research interviews (mentioned above) and panels of expert educators.

New Leader’s Principal Leadership Competencies include: lead change, plan strategically, distribute leadership, manage time and priorities, focus on student outcomes, learn from data, nurture excellent teaching and learning, develop and empower teams, build a safe and supportive culture, engage parents, schedule and manage effectively, and network outside the school.
