New School Leadership Program (NSLP) | University of Colorado - Colorado Springs

Obstacles

While the program has run quite smoothly, obstacles were experienced in each of the strands:

Strand I: The Program designed an online resume which was to serve as both a reporting tool for leadership experiences gain and also as a reflective tool. It was difficult to have the teacher leaders use this on a regular basis. They reported that they had regular person-to-person reflective sessions, both with their colleagues and with their mentoring principal, but the number of teacher leaders making online entries on a regular basis was limited.

Strand II: It was extremely important to have the right match between the beginning principal and their mentor (expert guide). If this wasn’t assured from the start, the principal did not take full advantage of this resource.

Strand III: The Program had initially envisioned experienced principals writing a case study reflecting one year in the principalship. It became immediately obvious that no principal was going to volunteer to write “one more report”. Modifying this to consist of a series of interviews, later transcribed and editing by an NSLP staff member, became the solution.
