Principals Excellence Program | University of Kentucky and Pike County Public Schools
Activities
PEP was delivered through the closed-cohort model (i.e., a uniquely defined community of learners that remains intact throughout an entire program). Early and ongoing community-building strategies ensured creation and maintenance of risk-safe learning environments within each cohort. Regular attendance at and participation in all training events was expected. The curriculum integrated multiple learning opportunities geared toward exposing participants to various situations and venues where diverse leadership skills could be developed. The clinical practicum each semester provided PEP participants with opportunities to visit other schools in the district and work closely with exemplary principals. During three summers PEP cohort members joined all district administrators and selected teacher leaders in grant-supported leadership institutes that focused on P-12 student learning issues. Institute topics included (a) review and alignment of the district’s P-12 mathematics and science curricula, (b) differentiation of instruction and assessment, and (c) research-based instructional leadership responsibilities distributed between principals and school teams. The various activities supported the development of professional networks of practicing and aspiring principals.
