Principals Excellence Program | University of Kentucky and Pike County Public Schools

Participants


A total of 30 public school educators (practicing principals and assistant principals, teachers or media specialists holding administrator certification) were selected to participate in PEP. Cohort A included 8 women and 7 men whose ages ranged from 25 to 60 years when they begin their professional development in January 2003. At that time their total years of experience as educators ranged from 4 to 26 years. The group included five principals, three assistant principals, and seven administrator-certified educators (i.e., six teachers, one media specialist) Tenures of the building-level administrators ranged from 6 months to 6 years.

Cohort B membership included 5 women and 10 men whose ages ranged from 28 to 56 years when they began their professional development in January 2004. The group included four principals, three assistant principals, one teacher on special assignment as acting principal, and seven other administrator-certified educators (i.e., six teachers, one media specialist). When they began PEP, their years of experience as educators ranged from 4 to 25 years, while the tenure of participating principals spanned from 6 months to 7 years.

Currently 10 of the 15 cohort members who participated as teachers or media specialists now serve as principals or assistant principals. One assistant principal was recruited by the Kentucky Department of Education to serve a three-year term as a Highly Skilled Educator who provides leadership assistance to low-performing schools in other rural districts.
