Requirements
Selective admissions procedures were used to identify the 30 final PEP participants. All applicants were required to hold at least a valid Kentucky provisional K-12 principal certificate and be nominated by a practicing educational administrator. Selection criteria targeted the characteristices of an ideal principal identified by the Pike County leadership team when leadership development activities were first initiated by the district in 1999. PEP applicants were required to be public school educators who provided evidence that they (a) understand Kentucky’s Learning Goals; (b) believe all children can learn at high levels; (c) have thorough knowledge about curriculum, instruction, and assessment; (d) demonstrate instructional leadership within their school communities; (e) show evidence of being master teachers, collaborative team members, and lifelong learners; and (f) understand the teaching and learning process. Applicants provided resumes, education platforms, reflective essays, transcripts, and letters of recommendation. A selection committee including UK professors and Pike County administrators review each application packet using a rubric specifically designed to align with characteristics of an “ideal principal” for Pike County. Each group of finalists for the two cohorts participated in a three-hour group interview that modeled PEP instructional strategies to be certain that they understood program expectations and wanted to participate. They also committed to staying or seeking placement as a principal in the district for three years after completing PEP.
