Leadership Curriculum Module Training | Southern Regional Education Board (SREB)

Program Summary

Introduction

The SREB Leadership Curriculum Module Training provides a cutting-edge resource for state academies, university preparation programs and school-based professional development or improvement teams. The framework for the curriculum is a set of 13 critical success factors for school leaders leading change. Each module makes explicit the knowledge and skills leaders must learn and apply to improve school and classroom practices and increase student achievement. The curriculum provides activities and resources to engage leaders and school leadership teams in solving real school problems.

Theory of Change

Leadership is key to systemic improvement. Leaders are the ones who can translate intentions into the reality of improved student achievement. Leaders who have knowledge and skills in fundamental instructional improvement practices are more successful in leading change. Leaders can acquire and develop practices through extended learning opportunities with a research-based curriculum.

Definition of Leadership

Instructional leadership is shared by the principal and teachers in a professional community that continuously improves for the benefit of student learning. School leaders collaborate in teams for the purpose of improving curriculum, instruction, environment and professional learning.

Mission Statement

The SREB Leadership Curriculum Module Training prepares principals, aspiring leaders and teacher leaders to aggressively improve curriculum, instruction and student achievement in their schools.

Costs

The registration cost for three days of training on each of the thirteen curriculum modules is $350 in 2005-2006. Access and continued use of the modules is available at no cost to participants completing SREB-delivered training. (SREB supports continued use through a secure website which module leaders access by password.)

Licensure

Participation in Leadership Curriculum Module Training may support and contribute to state and local systems’ requirements for certification and licensure. Individuals seeking licensure should verify requirements prior to participation.

Standards

The SREB Leadership Curriculum Module Training contributes to the development of the knowledge, understanding, and dispositions of educational leaders described in the Standards for School Leaders adopted by the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) through the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium (ISLLC).

In particular, the modules contribute to Standard 1 (“A school administrator is an educational leader who promotes the success of all students by facilitating the development, articulation, implementation, and stewardship of a vision of learning that is shared and supported by the school community”) and Standard 2 (“A school administrator is an educational leader who promotes the success of all students by advocating, nurturing, and sustaining a school culture and instructional program conducive to student learning and staff professional growth.”)

Measuring K-12 Student Success

Success of the SREB Leadership Curriculum Module Training is measured by the impact on improving the professional preparation of school leaders, strengthening and diversifying the pool of aspiring leaders, and improving conditions for such leaders to contribute meaningfully to school improvement and increased student achievement.
