School Leadership Program | Tuscaloosa City School System & University of Alabama - Tuscaloosa

Activities: More Details

Case studies are presented in the Educational Leadership Class. One study was a school effectiveness study done in Louisiana. The school was a highly effective school located in an inner-city environment consisting mainly of students of a low socioeconomic status. The remarkable thing about the school was that it had experienced a dramatic improvement over a six year period, going from one of the lowest performing schools to one of the highest. Much of the success was attributable to the principal, who was described in detail in the case study.

The presentation of the case study usually follows an introduction to leadership styles and change theory, particularly based on Michael Fullan’s writing. After the students are presented with descriptions of various leadership styles, the case study is used to allow the students to interact in groups and to determine what leadership style this principal exhibits and how she initiates the change process. This is then followed with the groups identifying a school in their district and developing a change plan based on what they have learned up to that point. Each group then presents their plan to the class.
