Program Summary
Introduction
Tuscaloosa’s School Leadership Program recruits, trains, and mentors individuals to acquire necessary knowledge and skills to acquire principalship or assistant principalship positions in the district. The program targets district schools that are especially high-need. Carefully selecting highly qualified participants for this three-year grant, which provides a solid foundation for the school leadership program, will increase the pool of qualified administrators.
Theory of Change
Change is effectively defined as a transformational process that occurs through three essential elements. These elements are critique, justice and caring. Transformation occurs when the leader is able to collaboratively raise levels of conscientiousness and performance within an organization.
Definition of Leadership
Leadership is the process of influencing others to willingly follow (Tead, 1933).
Mission Statement
The mission of the Tuscaloosa City Schools Leadership Program is to raise the level of administrative performance among school-district personnel, through diverse methods, to ensure that successful participants are reflective decision-makers who have the capacity to understand the legal, ethical, fiscal, curricular, instructional, and stakeholder challenges in the public school system.
Costs
The School Leadership Grant pays the participant’s cost, which is under $2000 per person. The primary cost incurred by the University of Alabama focus on Instruction and evaluation.
Licensure
This project relates to licensure requirements through establishing courses and activities that comply with standards adopted by the Alabama State Board of Education. The Board's objectives relative to knowledge and skill required for licensure are addressed in coursework.
Standards
The program is based on the Interstate School Leadership Licensure Consortium (ISLLC) standards and those standards established by The Alabama State Board of Education. The delivery of courses is also guided by the standards established by The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) The National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
Measuring K-12 Student Success
Criteria are currently being finalized in order to measure the impact of the program. The program will report on K-12 student achievement in January 2006.
