How to Use va-Lead
This online catalog is an effort to simplify the efforts of Virginia's school leaders to locate within a great variety of leadership programs the kind of standards-based leadership development program that best fits their particular needs. va-Lead can assist you in many leadership functions, such as:
- Your own personal professional development plan. You'll find association conferences and seminars on timely topics. You'll also find a large number of providers offering individualized sessions to address your own specific needs. It's helpful to check your system's performance evaluation requirements and to assess your career goals. You may have input from your supervisor, your school team, or community and PTA surveys to help you set goals and priorities. For self-assessment we suggest the Commonwealth's prototype evaluation instruments or e-Lead's own School Leadership Development Program Self-Assessment. Further, you may use your local school division evaluation instruments as self-assessments.
- Your school leadership team. You'll find numerous options that can be offered to your entire faculty and staff, to your teacher team leaders, or to any group within your local school, including sessions designed to meet the needs identified by your faculty and staff or to present the issues you are currently addressing in your school improvement plans.
- Your school division team. Of course, professional development needs will vary across any school division, and this variety will call for many different options as you strive to address those needs among diverse groups. The options listed here will enable you to suggest specific sessions for groups as varied as principals, assistant principals, teacher leaders, departments, office staff, and special needs program staff.
- Leadership academies. You can also review the dispersed leadership academies developed by school divisions, community and professional partners, and higher education. All are not available for incorporation into your professional development plan, but they serve as excellent examples for extending leadership throughout your district. You can begin the planning necessary to find funding and develop plans designed to meet your school division's needs.

Acknowledgements
Since its beginning in 2002 the Virginia State Action for Education Leadership Project (VA SAELP) has had support from policymakers, officials, educators, and stakeholders throughout the Commonwealth, including Governor Mark Warner. The VA SAELP team gratefully recognizes and acknowledges the direction of these supporters.
The Commonwealth Collaborative assisted in developing the overall concept of this catalog of leadership resources. Our appreciation goes to these Collaborative members, who have pioneered leadership development in Virginia: Andy Cole, Fairfax County Public Schools; David Blackburn, Old Dominion University; Cheryl Peters, Hampton; and Cathy Lassiter, Norfolk.
In addition the Guidance Committee extended the original concept and provided specific recommendations, most of which are incorporated here. Appreciation extends to these Committee members: Bill Bosher, JoLynne DeMary, Ken Magill, Jim Upperman, Judy Singleton, Hattie Webb, Dick Flanary, Cheryl Lockwood, Diane Barker, Olivia Dabney, Doug Fiore, John Hodge, Thelma Spencer and Anne Meek.
Special recognition is due to Diane Barker for skillfully managing the project; Esther Coleman and Joellen Killion for the generous use of the NSDC evaluation framework; and Kathy Harris for her expertise in education policy and coordination of services at CEPI and VCU. Judith Rizzo and Lisa Guckian of The Hunt Institute also provided excellent suggestions that strengthened these efforts. A final acknowledgement goes to Dan Norman of CEPI and Ken Magill of VCU for their continued support of the VA SAELP in all its undertakings.
