Hanover County Public Schools Leadership Academy | Hanover County Public Schools

Program Description

The Leadership Academy is designed to prepare participants for all levels of public school administration. Audiences that are encouraged to participate are those that are interested in serving as building level administrators, lead teacher instructional specialist, assistant directors and directors at central services.

Virginia Standard(s) Addressed

As evidenced by the course outline, all Virginia Standards are introduced and addressed throughout the academy.

Program Goals and Objectives

By the end of this program participants will demonstrate the ability to understand the numerous roles and responsibilities of administrators. Through the use of expert guest speakers and interactive presentations, participants are encouraged to partake in simulations involving "in box" activities, interrupting the budgeting process, crisis management planning, tips on keeping current with technology initiatives, and most importantly how this all works together to support student learning.

Program Format

The 18-session academy is held twice a month from 4:00 until 5:30 in a school within the division. Each session includes a guest speaker, along with varied activities and presentations. All participants are involved in reading a current book that looks at trends or issues in education. Group presentations and a personal response essay are required by all participants.

Target Audience

Prerequisites include completion of a Bachelor's degree program of studies, a minimum of 3 years experience in education, a recommendation from a building level administrator and a strong desire to succeed and grow with Hanover County Public Schools.

Self-Selection and/or Identification Through School Division

Yes/yes. This program can be used as a means of professional development, as well as a means of gaining more knowledge about the school division as a whole and is designed for current HCPS employees that have been identified by administrators at the school and division level.

Duration of Program

Approximately twice monthly from September until late May/early June.

Outcomes Measured

Since its beginning in 1998 the Leadership Academy has graduated 196 participants. Of those 41% have moved on to accept administrative positions with Hanover or another school system.

Program Evaluation

Participants complete an evaluation at the end of the academy.
