A Practical Approach to Applying Leadership Skills to Learning Organizations | The General Douglas MacArthur Foundation

Program Description

This program is designed for instructional leaders and others who desire improvement of their effectiveness as communicators, motivators, administrators, and mentors. By using the historical examples of General of the Army Douglas MacArthur, participants will be exposed to thirty-two practical methods of improving both personal leadership and organizational effectiveness. Employing a variety of educational approaches that illustrate the leadership of MacArthur, the presenter will highlight three key themes: inspirational leadership, organizational management, and major personal traits of a leader. Participants will analyze organizational challenges and apply concepts of leadership in a problem-solving session during the seminar.

Virginia Standard(s) Addressed

Planning & Assessment (ISLLC standard 3)
Safety & Organizational Management for Learning (ISLLC standards 2 & 3)
Professionalism (ISLLC standards 5 & 6)

Program Goals and Objectives

By the end of this program, participants will demonstrate the ability to identify key characteristics of leadership and demonstrate competence in analyzing organizational situations that require the application of various methods highlighted by the seminar. Attendees should be able to understand and relate to many of the Virginia Standards through participation in this seminar.

Program Format

This program is presented using an instructionally varied approach. An overview of MacArthur's life and the influences upon it are presented through a PowerPoint presentation. Following an instructor-led discussion of the leadership outline provided to all participants, leadership strategies will be grouped in accordance with the Virginia Standards of Leadership for Administrators. Following this analysis, participants will practice application of leadership skills and knowledge through a series of group exercises.

Target Audience

This program is targeting any group of educators that desire to sharpen their knowledge and skills in leadership. The program has been successfully presented to high school students engaged as student leaders, as well as adult audiences. This program is not currently available as a self-study.

No response.

Duration of Program

Approximately four hours.

Outcomes Measured

No data has yet been collected and analyzed regarding measurable outcomes of the training. Anecdotal evidence suggests the program focus has the potential to influence participants' leadership abilities, but efficacy of the program is, at the present time, unknown.

Program Evaluation

A program evaluation has been developed that consists of an opinion survey taken from participants immediately following the program. This survey includes twenty questions and asks participants to scale their answers through an agree-disagree continuum. A follow-up evaluation will be requested six months later, and will assist the presenters in measuring the outcomes of the program.
