What do you base your hiring decisions upon - gut instinct, research, practice, or other factors? Would you like to enhance your effectiveness at making hiring decisions? Hear how research-based interview components unite with qualities of effective teacher research to support educational leaders in picking the best applicant.

Self-Selection and/or Identification Through School Division

No/yes. ASCD anticipates publication of Stronge and Hindman's book on this topic in February 2006. The book and its online study guide provides instructional leaders with meaningful experiences and questions for reflection that may be used to compliment this professional development offering. In the event an individual administrator or collegial group want to conduct a book study on the topic of teacher selection, this book serves as an excellent and practical resource.

Duration of Program

Varies from 3-6 hours. For implementation of the Teacher Quality Interview a second 6-hour day is recommended in which inter-/intra-rater reliability is the focus. This day is largely interactive simulations.

Outcomes Measured

Instructional leaders will conduct hiring interviews in a fair and legal manner resulting in effective teacher selection. Based on practices implemented from the professional development offering, school/school system may conduct statistical analysis using selection data and subsequent teacher evaluation data (post hiring).

Program Evaluation

This offering provides direction to the teacher selection process through the setting of priority to select both highly qualified and effective teacher applicants through modification of a school/school system's teacher hiring process.
