va-Lead is an exciting new joint venture between e-Lead and the Virginia State Action for Education Leadership Project (SAELP), which is funded by The Wallace Foundation and housed at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Urban School Leaders Preparation Program | Collaborative Team of Arlington Public Schools, Alexandria City Public Schools, Falls Church City Public Schools and George Mason University

Program Description

The USLPP will enroll 28 students with preference given for those with master's degrees in education. The program employs a flexible, modular curriculum design that permits student programs of study to be individualized to acknowledge their expertise and best meet their learning needs. The program includes an extensive degree of practicum and internship work, including a capstone school improvement project. This project allows students to demonstrate their ability to lead improvement teams and demonstrate their knowledge, skills and abilities in school change that will bring about improved student learning.

The program will help potential administrators meet all Virginia Standards for Administrators.

Program Goals and Objectives

Participants will be eligible for administrative leadership licensure and will demonstrate the ability to promote instructional quality in a school through participatory internships, individualized planning and strong delivery of effective curriculum modules.

Program Format

USLPP will employ a variety of instructional strategies including traditional classroom instruction, technology based instruction (e.g., DVD-based curriculum modules, Blackboard courses), simulations, and performance-based activities.

Target Audience

28 students with master's degrees in education.

Self-Selection and/or Identification Through School Division

No/yes. After attending informational sessions, individuals may submit applications (including recommendations from administrators), and participate in the two-stage selection process, including interview and written submissions.

Duration of Program

The steering committee is in the process of developing the modular design with the expectation that participants beginning in the cohort in fall 2005 will complete the program in the spring of 2007.

Outcomes Measured

Outcomes measured will include participants' performance and progress, curriculum and program effectiveness and successful placement of graduates in administrative positions.
