Virginia Middle and High School Principals Conference & Exposition | Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals (VASSP) and Virginia Department of Education
Program Description
This four-day conference, co-sponsored by the Virginia Department of Education, provides middle and high school principals and assistant principals with opportunities to interact with State Department staff and get an overview of state priorities. It also allows participants to be exposed to best practices that have been implemented in successful schools. This four-day event also includes a pre-conference School Law Clinic. Participants may receive 3 hours of graduate credit through Virginia Commonwealth University.

Program Goals and Objectives
By the end of this program, participants will learn how to:
- act in accordance with the federal, state, and local educational laws, regulations and other policies that govern schools.
- relate policy initiatives to the welfare of the school community in responsible and ethical ways and recognize the relationship of public policy, governance, and schooling.
- demonstrate inquiry about current trends and issues as they pertain to instructional leadership.
- understand the importance of creating a vision of school improvement.
- develop additional management skills to improve discipline.
- apply skills in the area of supervision of instruction to implement educational programs that meet the needs of diverse populations.
- demonstrate a leadership style that will be responsive to the ethical, political, and legal forces that impact educational communities.
Program Format
General sessions, concurrent sessions, and roundtable discussions with identified speakers associated with the Virginia Department of Education, VASSP, nationally recognized leaders in public school education, and leading experts in educational law.
Target Audience
Middle and high school principals and assistant principals and aspiring school leaders.
Self-Selection and/or Identification Through School Division
Participants may self-select to attend or they may be identified by the school division to attend.
Duration of Program
Four-day conference with an opportunity for participants to receive graduate credit.
Outcomes Measured
Outcomes are measured by the school divisions that support the attendance of the participants.
Program Evaluation
Each participant completes a conference evaluation form providing feedback to VASSP for use in future conferences.
