Program Description
The William and Mary National Leadership Academy promotes instructional leadership of school and district leaders and addresses what leaders need to know and do to assure that all students learn and are successful. The program features an annual campus-based conference with nationally known researchers and practitioners addressing current leadership issues. The June 2006 Academy Faculty featured Michael Fullan, Thomas Guskey and Richard DuFour. Follow-up support after the summer Academy includes a Fall Seminar and access to resources that promote transfer of academy learning to practice. The June 24-26 2007 Featured Faculty will include Andy Hargreaves, Michael Schmoker, and Marcia Tate.

Program Goals and Objectives
By the end of this program, participants will demonstrate the ability to:
- Access resources on research-based instruction and leadership and apply to leadership practices.
- Participate in a community of learners and expand network of professional practitioners.
- Leave with resources for facilitating school-based professional development activities.
Program Format
- The College of William and Mary educational leadership faculty and the SURN Superintendent Advisory Board identify focus for program.
- SURN Staff Development Study Group, composed of professional development directors, help to identify speakers and leaders for program.
- Program delivered every year at the end of June for 2.5 days with follow-up workshops in November.
- Districts register leadership teams or individuals register and pay fee.
- Participants receive certificates of participation for recertification points.
- Program begins with participants setting goals for learning and ends with participants targeting what they plan to transfer to practice.
- School and district teams are offered resources for implementing what they've learned at their sites.
Target Audience
- Individual participants include local, state, national and international school leaders who choose to attend the program each year.
- School leadership teams participate and include principals, assistant principals and teacher leaders.
- District-wide teams identified through the school district include superintendents and school and central office administrators.

Duration of Program
- Program began in 1996 and includes an annual two-day conference on the last Monday and Tuesday of June each year. Sixty percent of the participants come from SURN districts and return each year. Pre-conference micro-workshops are offered on Sunday.
- A Fall Seminar of one-day workshops at the College of William and Mary offers opportunities for deeper learning on the same topics addressed at the June conference.
Outcomes Measured
- Degree to which school and district teams continue participation in the annual program
- Degree to which partner schools and/or districts contact the School Leadership Institute for follow-up support and additional leadership development
- Degree to which participants access Blackboard for additional resources
Program Evaluation
- Evaluations of sessions completed by participants at the end of each program are analyzed by staff and SURN focus groups to inform future program planning.
- District teams reflect on and discuss their experiences at the end of the conference and provide feedback to staff for planning the next program.
